Practical notes for today's tides
Tide safety in the Channel Islands
- Spring tides (around new and full moon) can be 2–4 metres higher than neap tides. Always check the predicted height, not just the time.
- The tide comes in very fast on flat beaches like St Ouen's Bay (Jersey) and Vazon Bay (Guernsey). Never walk far out without checking tide times first.
- Causeway crossings (Lihou Island, Elizabeth Castle) can be cut off in 15–20 minutes. Allow plenty of time.
- Sark's La Coupée is always passable but the surrounding beaches are highly tidal — check before scrambling down to the shore.
